Big And Bold

designed by Astrid Thorstenson

Do you have half-yards of large-scale “big and bold” prints? Combine them with some tone-on-tone, solid or small-scale fabrics for a striking effect.

Cottage Flowers

designed by Wendy Mathson

Our Chapter had accumulated a lot of scrap strips. This pattern was designed to use as many of them as possible. Yes, making quilts from scraps takes a bit longer, but you feel so good when the scrap bins look emptier! This pattern includes an alternate method for making “Sew and Flip” triangle corners.

Treasure Chest

designed by Wendy Mathson

Six large blocks set with sashing. Ideas for making pattern variations are included on the last page This pattern includes a page of instructions for making “No-Waste Flying Geese” in several different sizes.

Square and a Half

designed by Wendy Mathson

Simple 4-Patch blocks are made from strip sets, then cut apart and recombined to make new blocks. This pattern as written makes a larger (48” x 54”) lap-size quilt, but you can make fewer blocks or omit the outer border for a smaller prayer quilt.

Framing Rail Fence

designed by Astrid Thorstenson

Astrid has written this pattern for easy and fast piecing. It’s a great design to use for beginners. Variations are included.

Building on Rail Fence

Astrid brings us more ideas for transforming the basic rail fence pattern by combining it with other blocks. Instructions for making these simple blocks are included. In this pattern, she also illustrates an idea for how to quilt the Prayer Quilt, if your chapter uses quilting as well as ties.

Birds Eye View

designed by Wendy Mathson

Strip sets make short work of this easy quilt. We did this as a mystery class and it was amazing how each quilt looked so different. Forget about planning. Just follow the directions for picking fabrics, then “Let go and let God.”

Beginner’s Star

designed by Wendy Mathson

This is a great teaching pattern. Beginners can practice scant quarter-inch seams with their strip sets. Stitch-and-flip corners make the triangles on the Snowball blocks.

Take some care with the bias block edges and this one will go together in no time. There is a tip for using spray starch or sizing to tame those stretchy edges.
